Suboxone is a great medication to use in a medication-assisted therapy program. It is primarily used to treat a variety of substance use disorders such as alcoholism, heroin addiction, or opioid prescription pain medication addiction. One distinct benefit of using Suboxone as treatment for opioid addiction is the “ceiling effect”, which simply means that taking more Suboxone than you’ve been subscribed to will not result in a full opioid effect and the user getting high. This is a huge advantage over other treatment drugs, such as methadone. Suboxone is a combination of two drugs, buprenorphine and naloxone. Unlike methadone, it doesn’t stimulate the opioid receptors in the brain in the same way a full agonist like methadone does. Suboxone also contains a drug called naloxone. Naloxone is a medication that is used to reverse overdoses of opioids. It does this by knocking other opioids off the receptors, preventing negative effects such as respiratory depression (slowed breathing). Naloxone does not interfere with buprenorphine’s effects when the Suboxone is taken as prescribed. Because of this, it’s not possible to overdose. Suboxone can alleviate withdrawal pains and suppress cravings to allow participants to focus on other aspects of their treatment. It is the first medication used to treat opiate addictions approved to be prescribed from a physician’s office. .
